Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot!!!

In Wisconsin, it appears that we have skipped spring altogether and jumped straight into summer.  I ran at 6:00 this morning and it was already 77° and rising.  Don’t let the temperature keep you from your workout, I have several suggestions for avoiding the heat this summer:

  • Rise and Set – If you’re exercising outside, pick times when the sun won’t be beating down on you.  Early morning and later evening workouts will be much more comfortable than workouts during peak sun hours.
  • Shade and Breeze – Pick places that are naturally more suitable for a cool workout:  parks with lots of trees, windy shorelines, etc.
  • Dress the Part – Cotton may breathe well, but once it’s wet it stays that way and can stick to you, making you feel even warmer.  Invest in some wicking workout clothes, they pull moisture away from your skin and dry quickly, leaving you much more comfortable.
  • Short and Sweet – Trust your body and know your limits.  If you can only do a 15-20 minute workout, then do that.  If you need to slow your pace, then do that.  The goal here is to be healthy, not sick or injured.
  • Inside In – If you prefer to stay indoors but don’t have a gym membership, you still have plenty of options:  Workout DVDs or On-Demand Workouts from your cable provider; jumping rope or running up and down the stairs in your house or apartment building; or walking the local mall.  You also may want to check out the options at your local school.  Many high school gyms are open to the public during certain hours or on certain days.

Regardless of your method to beat the heat, make sure you drink plenty of water; not just before and after your workout, but all throughout day!!!
